Employment, Environment and Sustainable Development

This is an IDPAD Project entrusted to the Centre (February 1999) by the 'Centre for Development Alternatives', Ahmedabad. It aims at investigating the technological, institutional and financial aspects of ecological regeneration through surplus labour and employment intensive sustainable development in selected backward regions of Andhra Pradesh (Anantapur and Mahabubnagar). The specific purpose of this project is to document a few model case studies where employment has been generated, simultaneously protecting the environment. Among the cases studied are the following:

In the selected case studies, environment status improved considerably. The areas are full of greenery and water table rose substantially. Employment opportunities increased and migration came down. The villagers are also expecting sufficient long-term employment.
