Three districts from the three distinct geographical regions of Andhra Pradesh viz., Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana were selected for studying the successful experiments of Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) in rural development. They were West Godavari (Coastal Andhra) Anantapur (Rayalaseema) and Medak (Telangana).

To begin with, an attempt is made to know the number of NGOs available in the study area. The registration (under Societies Registration Act, 1860) of the new associations/ organisations is done at Hyderabad for all the districts of Telangana. In the case of Andhra and the Rayalaseema regions, the registration will be done at the respective district registrar offices. According to the officials of the Inspector-General of Registration and Stamps, Andhra Pradesh, 30 to 40 Societies are registered in a day. No classified data (type or size of the organisation etc.) are available at this office. By and large, after the registration, there will be no correspondence between the Society and the Registrar's office. In these circumstances, it is difficult to assess the exact number of NGOs actually working for Rural development. Around 30 active NGOs could be identified in Medak district. In fact, this number is much less than the actual number of NGOs registered in the district.

Structured schedules were developed for the survey. Data were collected from prominent NGOs in the selected mandals of the Medak District. Survey was conducted among twentyone NGOs. Self-Help Group (SHG) Programmes run by Deccan Development Society (DDS) and Svayam Krishi Sansthan (SKS) in the less developed region were chosen for detailed study. Similarly in the developed region, National Child Labour Programme (NCLP) run by Rural Education and Agriculture Development Society (READS) and Thrift Groups run by Transfer of Environment Education Society (TREES) were chosen for detailed study. The data analysis is in progress in respect of survey in Medak district. In Anantapur District, 18 NGOs are interviewed using structured schedules. Fieldwork is in progress in Anantapur and West Godavari districts.
